Digital Rallye Gear

So lets say you want to see what all this rallye stuff is about, you can listen to the old guard and go out and buy a stack of expensive specialized gear from one of their buds, that gathers dust 50 weeks out of the year, or you can try your best to build a budget trad DIY and be amazed of how many issues can pop up and ruin your day. Trad gear can be very complex and troubleshooting a daunting task.

Or bring what a lot of us already have, our weapon of choice has been a single iPad Mini, running the RallyBlitz Nav Pro app that displays the ODO, Cap, WP and hazard functionality and roadbook PDF, advanced and adjusted with BlitzButtons, running Tulip roadbook PDF's and GPX WP files loaded.

On my iPad alone I have my bike's microfiche, owners and repair manuals, a first aid app, can check emails, watch Netflix, nav w/GPS apps w/memory resident maps, set my GoPro, so much more then any of the specialized trad gear can close to and at a much lower cost. Now remember, you don't need any fancy cases to use an iPad and try a RB ride, you don't even really need the app or buttons to give it a try. Worst case, you choose golf over rallye and have an iPad you can still use literally everyday.

While it's true that most races don't allow digital yet, and there are a growing number that do, but it's also true that none of these races are in the US and only a handful of Americans go out of state to participate in these races. So sure when we're all ready to throw down $100-150K to run Dakar, we can upgrade to $50k KTM RFR's with full rallye gear and no need to even lose a minute designing a rally build, it's all there in the crate and KTM can supply any needed spares in the bivy.

There's a group of us that have adopted digital rallye racing, have invested the time to learned how to use, troubleshoot and have thousands of miles on them now. The old guard of course don't, but that doesn't stop them from trying to sound like experts, which they are far from, most don't even know what we've been doing. They will dismiss or demean what we're doing, when that fails they'll start copying, why? Because it's better!

Probably the best way to get to understand what we're talking about with a digital rallye setup is to do a build, so let's start there.
